It’s Day 18 of our Switzerland trip and our fourth day in the Appenzell area! Today, we don’t have to catch a gondola so we can spend as much time devouring breakfast as we want. And we do devour since it is so delicious. Sonja got a whole basket of bread for herself, then reached into it later to grab a roll but only found the end crust piece. Who ate from her basket?! Today we only had one pitcher of milk for hot chocolate and that was the perfect amount. Better than 3 pitchers! After we were stuffed with the delicious feast, we headed back to the rooms to prep for our hike. We caught the next train to Wasserauen.
The forecast for today included wind gales up to 80 mph! This works with our plans because we are not planning ridge hikes today. We are going to walk up a hill through the forest to see Seealpsee (a lake). The wind was strongly blowing and it looks like all the gondolas are shut down. That means everyone else around is going to be heading up our trail too. This was definitely not a secluded hike. Our trail was pretty steep but we made it! The lake was beautiful. We could see many of the other hikes we had done in previous days. We walked around the lake and found a church in the woods with benches outside to sit and relax on.
Our path down was to take the semi-paved path with steep gradients that kills your knees. This was also a popular path today. Most times we have taken this path, it has been popular, especially with the local white-haired population. I think this is a fun evening walk for the locals. All the non-locals basically die going up or down this hill. We discover the secret to less pain is to squat down a bit, give into gravity, and jog down. Less pain on the knees when you use your thighs and gravity.
Dinner was again delicious! Dessert was fantastic as well!
Hiking in Hurricane winds – at least 75 and above is considered a class 1 hurricane. But that doesn’t hinder you guys!
