It’s Day 7 of our Switzerland trip and our second day in Murren!

After days of physical abuse to our muscles and joints, the plan is to take an easy-ish day. That’s the plan but plans don’t always stay solid. Today is sunny and clear! We are thankful! By the time our wonderful breakfast was over, we decided to split into two groups for the first half of the day. The mature crowd was heading to the Schilthorn by cable car to view the James Bond building, finally see the majestic views of the surrounding mountains, and brave the thrill walk at Birg. One of the cheap crowd wanted to hike up to the Schilthorn but we decided to hike up to Birg instead because hiking to the Schilthorn could be considered insane for people of our fitness level! I will have to get pictures of the mature crowd’s adventures. I did hear some stories. Bobsled videos were made but not recorded. The men’s bathrooms had plants growing in every other urinal and every other sink. The stall doors had silhouettes of Bond girls. There was a ‘no high heels’ sign down at the bottom of a steep slippery embankment and staircase. Before that sign was another sign warning you not to pass because of super dangerous conditions. At Birg, the thrill walk was thrilling – for some in a terrifying way and for others in an enjoyable way. Some parts were on clear plexiglass, others were on cables (like tightropes), some was a metal chain tube. There was a sign forbidding you not the leave the thrill walk, so no jumping over the side, I guess. All of the thrill walk was over a huge cliff. The mature group relaxed at Birg until the slow cheap crowd could join them.

The cheap crowd meanwhile was steadily climbing up steep inclines. The views were amazing! We were hiking across from the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. We found a nice waterfall/stream to relax by and replenish with some food. A hang glider passed right over our heads. On a hike later in the day, we were able to see just how steep this hike was and we realized we could have taken a tram to cut out some of the hill climbing. We did finally reach Birg and meet everyone else.

We all took the lift down, hiked up another steep hill to watch some hang gliders jump, and then headed to coop to buy food for lunch, a quite delicious lunch of sandwiches, chips, soda, juice, plums, and a piece of leftover pizza. Of course, we can’t be done with hiking by lunch so we are going to head to Allmendhubel and the Mountain View Trail. We just miss the tram but don’t have long to wait for the next one.

At Allmendhubel, we admire the children’s playground and water park. One little boy decides he needs to go to the bathroom, so…. We start off on our hike, which is supposed to be relaxing on our day of relaxation. Well, it kind of was. Again, the views were gorgeous. And again, the hike was a bit strenuous on some of the downhills – lots of roots to give us nightmares and flashbacks of The Poop Hike of days gone by. But we did eventually make it to Grutschalp before dark and before the last train left the station. On to Murren and dinner!

Dinner was spatzli, chicken, vegetables, plums, milk, juices, grapefruit soda, fresh Murren water, and tea (water boiled to perfection!). Dessert was another rolled cake, which was deemed ‘not as good as the other smaller lemon and raspberry rolled cakes from Migros’ by the discerning foodies of the group.

The relaxing day wore the majority out so it was an early bedtime to get ready for the day planned tomorrow. Well, we have no firm plans yet, but all the options will require well rested hikers.

    1. I have not adjectives to adequately express my appreciation for the comments and the photos. You are now in territory that I have personally viewed – the Jungfrau. There is an ice cave at the bottom in Grindelwald that his wonderful – I am sure that is old hat to you and not worthy of going again.

If I were along- there would have had to be three groups – the young more adventurous ones, the more mature ones and then the chickens like me.

    2. Tomorrow is Dianes birthday. She planned a hike from the bottom of the gondola to the top of the gondola. I reminded her the gondola ride was included in the regional pass. She wanted to repeat a walk she saw on the internet. She clearly watches to much on the internet. If we survive we will update on injuries and weariness.
