It’s Day 14 of our Switzerland trip and we are headed to the Appenzell area!
We pack up, try to finish all the breakfast food, and head out to the train station. We have a long train ride in front of us with an excursion in Luzern to break up all the sitting.
At Luzern, we store our luggage in some lockers and head out to see the city. We walk along the river and cross the flower bridge. We check out a fancy church. We see paintings on houses. Most of the bathrooms we find require payment to open the door but finally we find a dirty one on a random street next to a flower garden. It’s rather gross, but free.
Next stop is for lunch. We eat at the Coop restaurant/cafe. The food is good. After we already have our food, we see other people piling food on their plates and realize we should do that next time because the prices are the same no matter how much you take. Sonja and Dave kept getting shoved down the line by hungry ladies.
We check out the stone Lion of Luzern. It is very spectacular. It commemorates victims and survivors of an insurrection in 1792. Then we head to the wall and towers to climb and get some great views. We have a hard time finding the entrance but eventually do. There are a lot of steps to climb. The stairs are narrow and steep. The views are great but not everyone likes the height.
We saw everything on our list so now we head back to pick up our luggage and catch the train. We make it to Appenzell and to our stop in Schwende. There was only one other passenger in the whole train. The conductor waved goodbye to us. The hotel is up a hill. A steep and long hill. Up we go, lugging our suitcases. But finally we make it! We get our rooms, drop off our luggage and head off for a walk because dinner is not for another hour and a half. Well, it starts to rain and ominous clouds are rolling in. No one want another lake hike downpour experience so we decide to relax in our rooms until dinner. Dinner is in the hotel restaurant, which is a very popular place for the locals. The menus are in German but thankfully we have our translator app, which seems to work well. Our food is really delicious. Probably everyone is thankful they can eat professionally cooked food instead of the fancy cheapo spaghetti.
After dinner, we view our pictures for the day and plan our hike for tomorrow. Let’s see what the weather looks like tomorrow!
Heidi was losing it on “Sonja and Dave were pushed back down the line by some hungry ladies” And we like that you call a Cathedral and pretty Church. I got sick of seeing Cathedral’s in Europe. Much prefer the mountain scenery and countryside of your itinerary.
Your food looked like a step up from the previous days. And it looked like you could take a shower at the same time you sat on the Pot.
You guys need to take a short little walk up to a lake. I heard its pretty flat and not steep at all.
The locals jog to the lake and back in the evening.
