It’s Day 6 of our Switzerland trip and the first day in Murren!

Today is a day of good train connections!

We started the day with a wonderful breakfast feast provided by Denise. Yogurts, breads, cheeses, granolas, coffee, tea, orange juice, hot chocolate, need I go on? It was delicious! Denise showed us the view from the webcam on Mannlichen – the clouds were below the webcam and clear views were available! Well…… that was then……

Murren to Grutschalp to Wengen to Mannlichen – we made all the connections with plenty of time to spare. On the way up Mannlichen, the clouds parted and we saw blue skies and mountains. However, that gave us false hope. We were just in a bubble. We decided to hike up the steep hill to the crown anyway, hoping the clouds would dissipate by the time we reached the top. No such luck! We did get an amazing leg workout from hiking the incredibly steep hill, which had ropes so you could pull yourself up as needed. The crown was nice but the views were all white. You could imagine the scenery though because all around the crown were small pictures identifying all the various peaks and villages. So we took pics, built a snowman, kept hoping for some sun, then decided to leave. The clouds did slightly recede by the time we were at the bottom, but not enough to give any views of the mountains, except maybe 1 peak intermittently through the clouds.

The next leg to Grindlewald was on a new (since our last visit) gondola. These new versions were bigger and faster. As we approached the valley, we did begin to see some great views without clouds. Quite amazing views.

We hopped off this on and on to the new Eigergletscher lift. Wow! Largest lift I have ever seen. This could seat at least 24 people with plenty of additional standing room. The views here were also amazing, while we were still out of the clouds.

Now on to the Eiger Trail which traverses across the face of the Eiger, thankfully not straight up it because none of us brought our climbing gear. The walk was pleasant and beautiful. The first part was in the clouds but that had its own beauty. The second portion was below the clouds so we did get some nice vies of the valley and some mountains. I can only imagine how spectacular this would have been on a clear day!

We decided to head back to Murren instead of checking out the glacier. The train to Kleine Scheidegg was uneventful. We had the whole car to ourselves. It parked and we checked the board. We were scheduled to leave in 20 minutes from the same track on the same train. Or so we thought! 2 minutes before the scheduled departure time, we notice another train parked in front of ours on the track to the left and a lot of people boarded that one and there was barely anyone on ours. hmmm… seems suspicious. We investigate and learn that we want that other train! We walk up there and jump on, making our connection in the nick of time! We were incredibly fortunate that we did not miss that train because they don’t come very often!

We have some coop pizza, large tater tots, bread and jam, teas, juices for dinner. Dessert was a custard donut sandwich basically.

    Here's a mapped route!

    1. I don’t know how you planned this trip but it is very impressive. Hiking in Switzerland is the best. Who is doing the writing? Excellent. This is professionally done.

Looking forward to your travels to Grindelwald.

      1. We have been through Grindelwald a few times but have not had a chance to explore it yet as we were just jumping from train to train or gondola. We ran out of time on our Eiger Hike day but we were going to walk through the town check out the graveyard with a lot of Kauffmann sites and then head up to Pfinstegg Glacier. We might still do this all in a few days but our schedule is pretty fluid right now so we aren’t sure where exactly we are going each day yet.
While on the Eiger hike, the village in the valley in most of the pictures is Grindlewald.
